Busia Law Court Chief Magistrate Edna Nyaloti on Wednesday supervised the destruction of drugs valued at over Ksh.21 million at the Alupe Sub-County Hospital incinerator. The exercise, conducted in adherence to a court order, involved heroin and bhang that had been confiscated in previous operations.
According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP), a total of 3,936 grams of heroin, valued at approximately Ksh.11.8 million, and 337.2 kilograms of bhang, estimated at Ksh.10.1 million, were burned under the supervision of multi-agency officials.
The heroin had been seized from convict Mumbi Mwaura, who had earlier been fined Ksh.50 million or, in default, sentenced to 50 years in prison by the same court on March 18, 2025. The destruction process is part of Kenya’s ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and illegal substances in the country.
The exercise was witnessed by a multi-agency team comprising officers from the Judiciary, the National Police Service (NPS), the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Public Health, the Kenya Prisons Service, the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), the ODPP, and both County and Sub-County security teams. Their presence ensured the exercise adhered to legal and environmental safety standards.
Chief Magistrate Edna Nyaloti emphasized that such actions are crucial in Kenya’s fight against illicit drugs, protecting communities from the dangers associated with narcotics and controlled substances. She urged law enforcement agencies to continue vigilant operations to intercept and prosecute drug-related offenses.
This event highlights the commitment of Kenyan authorities to uphold the rule of law and public safety, while ensuring that seized narcotics are destroyed responsibly. The ODPP noted that similar exercises will continue across the country as part of a broader strategy to curb drug trafficking.
Kenya’s anti-drug initiatives remain a key focus for both the judiciary and law enforcement, sending a strong message to those involved in the illegal drug trade.
