Authorities in Busia County have arrested a man accused of trafficking ten kilograms of cannabis sativa valued at approximately KSh 300,000. The suspect was intercepted at the Suo roadblock along the Busia–Kisumu highway while traveling on a passenger bus bound for Nairobi.
Police Operation and Seizure
The operation was prompted by an intelligence tip-off, leading police to conduct a thorough search of the bus. Officers discovered neatly wrapped bales of bhang hidden in the luggage compartment. The suspect, reportedly the owner of the illicit cargo, was taken into custody and transported to Busia Police Station for further questioning.
Western Corridor Drug Trafficking Concerns
Investigators noted that the bus originated from Kenya’s western border region, an area increasingly used for transporting illegal substances. Police emphasized that such operations are part of ongoing efforts to curb narcotics smuggling through border counties and major highways connecting Busia, Kisumu, and Nairobi.
Charges and Investigations
The suspect is expected to face charges related to drug possession and trafficking once investigations are completed. The seized bhang has been secured as evidence pending laboratory analysis and court proceedings. Authorities praised the officers involved for their vigilance and swift coordination, which prevented the consignment from reaching its intended destination.
Community Involvement
Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities. Collaboration with community informants and transport operators is crucial in dismantling drug networks that threaten public safety and youth wellbeing. The ongoing investigation aims to trace the broader trafficking network linked to the seized cannabis.
