A Mombasa-based lawyer is among 22 individuals arrested in a nationwide counter-terror operation targeting supporters, financiers, and facilitators of terror networks, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed. The operation covered Nairobi, Mombasa, Kapseret, Moyale, and Marsabit.
Police allege that the lawyer and his co-accused face charges of facilitating, radicalising, recruiting, and financing terror-related activities. He was arrested on Friday, November 14, 2025, by the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) during a sting operation in Mombasa.
The suspect was presented at Kahawa Law Courts on Monday, where detectives requested a 20-day custodial order. The court has scheduled the ruling for Wednesday, November 19, 2025. His co-accused, arrested in Nairobi, will have their case heard on Tuesday, November 18, following a prior deferment.
Meanwhile, another suspect in Uasin Gishu County is set for arraignment on November 25, with authorities seeking a 15-day custodial order. On November 26, rulings will be made on 20-day and 30-day custodial orders for additional suspects arrested in Mombasa and Marsabit.
Central to the investigation are around ten young recruits arrested earlier this year while allegedly preparing to leave the country. Investigators revealed that these recruits were influenced online and through local contacts before being moved through Kenya to Puntland, Somalia, and eventually Yemen, areas identified as transit points for ISIS affiliates.
The DCI stressed that despite past terror attacks causing loss of life in Kenya, pressure is intensifying on terror networks. Authorities are committed to thorough investigations aimed at dismantling these groups. The public has been assured that law enforcement remains vigilant and will leave no stone unturned in the fight against terrorism.
This nationwide crackdown highlights the increasing focus on preemptive action against terror networks and the role of law enforcement in preventing radicalisation and recruitment within the country.
