The Milimani Law Courts have extended the detention of two police officers suspected of fatally shooting a hawker in Nairobi’s Central Business District. Senior Principal Magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi granted the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) seven additional days to complete investigations into the death of Boniface Kariuki Mwangi, also known as Eli Joshua.
The two officers, Klinzy Barasa and Duncan Kiprono, are alleged to have been involved in the shooting of Kariuki, a surgical mask vendor, during a crowd dispersal operation along Moi Avenue on June 18. According to witness accounts and video footage widely circulated online, Kariuki was shoved by one officer before being shot at close range by another as he attempted to walk away. Witnesses maintain he was not participating in any protests at the time of the incident.
Kariuki suffered critical head injuries and was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, where he was admitted to the ICU. He was declared brain-dead on June 29 and succumbed to his injuries the following day.
IPOA, which is spearheading the investigation, informed the court that it needed more time to conduct forensic analysis, ballistic examinations, and record additional witness statements. Though the prosecution initially requested a 14-day extension, all parties agreed to a seven-day period. The suspects will remain in custody at Capitol Hill Police Station until July 10.
Magistrate Ekhubi extended his condolences to the bereaved family, affirming the judiciary’s commitment to justice. Representatives from IPOA, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), and family members were present in court during the mention.
The case has drawn national attention, with President William Ruto expressing condolences and donating Sh1 million to support the family’s funeral arrangements. Local leaders and human rights groups have condemned the incident and demanded accountability.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has assured the public that any officers found to have violated the law will not be shielded. Kariuki’s father, Jonah Kariuki, has urged the authorities to ensure justice is served for his late son.
