A dramatic twist unfolded in an Eldoret courtroom as the daughter of former international marathoner Samson Kandie implicated her own mother in his brutal murder. The gripping testimony shocked those in attendance and added a new layer of complexity to an already high-profile case.
The daughter, a university student, described a turbulent home environment marked by constant quarrels and emotional abuse. She revealed that her mother frequently mistreated her father and accused him of infidelity, often expressing open hostility toward him in front of the children.
“She used to say she was tired of him and wished he would die in a road accident while driving the family car,” the daughter recounted during her testimony.
The mother, a clinical officer and mother of four, stands accused alongside two men of conspiring in the October 2 murder of Kandie. The deceased was allegedly attacked and fatally wounded within the compound of his residence in the Elgon View estate. According to the prosecution, the attackers were unknown assailants, but growing testimony suggests a deeper, more personal motive behind the killing.
Held without bail due to security concerns, all three accused have denied the charges. However, the daughter’s statements painted a grim picture of a household strained by mistrust and domestic strife. She recalled being told by her mother that their lives would be better without her father, and that he was supposedly involved with another woman named Millicent.
On the day of the murder, the daughter described a series of unsettling events. Upon arriving home in the evening with her mother, she noticed the compound was dark and the security lights were off an unusual occurrence. When she asked her mother about it, she was dismissed and told to call her father.
After repeatedly trying to reach him, someone else eventually answered the phone and instructed her to check the outside toilet behind the house. This chilling direction led to the discovery that Kandie had been violently attacked.
Earlier, her mother had told her that Kandie might not return home that night, claiming he was staying over at a girlfriend’s house. This statement, now viewed as potentially deceptive, added to the suspicions surrounding the case.
The court also heard that the prosecution has assembled a list of over 20 witnesses, including investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and a government pathologist. Their testimonies are expected to shed further light on the circumstances surrounding the death of the celebrated athlete.
The case continues to unfold, with more explosive revelations anticipated as the trial progresses.
