Detectives have arrested a key suspect in connection with the theft of Ksh3.6 million from a Greek tourist during a trip to the Maasai Mara Game Park. The arrest followed a detailed investigation into the incident, which began shortly after the tourist reported the loss.
The visitor had arrived in Nairobi on August 5, 2025, and the next day set out for Maasai Mara accompanied by a tour guide and an acquaintance he had met online. The individual, who introduced himself under the false name “Jeremiah John,” joined the trip and appeared friendly. However, while at the reserve, he allegedly disappeared with the tourist’s valuables, including three debit cards, a mobile phone, and a Seiko Crystal wristwatch.
Subsequent investigations revealed that the stolen debit cards had been used to withdraw approximately Ksh3.6 million from the victim’s bank account. Forensic analysis later confirmed that “Jeremiah John” was an alias, and the suspect’s true identity was uncovered. Detectives tracked him to a hideout in Nairobi, where he was arrested.
Upon his capture, officers recovered several items, including multiple mobile phones, the stolen wristwatch, Ksh54,050 in local currency, an undisclosed amount in U.S. dollars, and a brand-new Trek bicycle believed to have been purchased using part of the stolen funds.
Authorities described the arrest as the result of meticulous investigative work and strong inter-agency collaboration. The suspect is currently in custody at the Central Police Station in Nairobi and is expected to be arraigned in court on Monday, August 11, 2025.
The case has raised growing concerns about the safety of tourists visiting Kenya, particularly in relation to crimes facilitated through online connections. Law enforcement agencies have urged both visitors and residents to exercise extreme caution when interacting with unfamiliar individuals, especially those met via digital platforms.
Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the suspect acted alone or as part of a broader criminal syndicate targeting foreign visitors. Detectives are also tracing additional transactions linked to the stolen cards to recover more of the stolen funds.
