The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested three notorious robbers who have been terrorizing wine and spirits shop owners across Nairobi and its outskirts. The suspects were apprehended following several days of intensive surveillance, after the public tipped off detectives about their activities.
Detectives moved in on the first two suspects at their Ngara residence. The suspects attempted to flee at the sight of officers, abandoning a black Toyota Harrier, which was seized as crucial evidence. Following the forensic trail, investigators traced a third suspect to Njiru Makongeni, recovering another vehicle, a black Toyota Noah, reportedly used to transport stolen liquor. Police noted that the car seats still carried the smell of freshly spilt alcohol.
Despite these arrests, the gang’s alleged mastermind remains at large. Residing in Mugutha, Ruiru, police have obtained a search warrant for his home. Items recovered include two car seats ripped from the Toyota Noah, a number plate, break-in tools, multiple mobile phones, and a hoodie matching one seen in CCTV footage during a recent robbery.
Empty cartons of expensive alcohol were scattered across the compound, providing further evidence of the gang’s heavy looting spree. In a shocking twist, officers also recovered a herd of 25 bulls, suspected to be stolen and hidden at the mastermind’s second residence in Njiru, which are now being held at Ruai Police Station.
The DCI has confirmed that a manhunt for the gang’s ringleader is ongoing, with authorities vowing to bring all perpetrators to justice. Shop owners in Nairobi have welcomed the arrests, calling them a relief after months of targeted break-ins and thefts.
These developments highlight the DCI’s commitment to tackling organized crime and protecting businesses in Nairobi. Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activities to help authorities curb criminal activities in their neighborhoods.
