A special squad from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has been deployed to Migori to assist local police in tracking down the killers of a businesswoman who was shot dead during a robbery on Thursday night.
The victim, identified as 48-year-old Mary Mongare, was an M-Pesa agent operating in Migori Town. She was attacked shortly after closing her business at around 9 p.m. on October 23, 2025.
Reports indicate that Mongare had earlier deposited KSh500,000 received from a customer before heading home with her daughter. The two boarded a motorcycle and later alighted at the Sala area along the Migori–Kisii highway, from where they began walking home.
It was at that point that two armed men, whose faces were covered, confronted them and demanded their belongings. In panic, Mongare’s daughter screamed and ran for help, prompting the gunmen to open fire. Mongare was shot three times—in the right ankle, left wrist, and the left side of the chin—before the attackers fled with her bag containing an M-Pesa phone and a flask.
She was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment. Her body was later moved to the mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Detectives from the DCI’s homicide and serious crimes units have since joined Migori police in investigating the killing. According to officers involved in the probe, the team is following crucial leads that could help identify and arrest the suspects.
The incident has intensified security concerns among residents, following a series of violent robberies reported in Migori and its environs in recent months. Police have now increased patrols within the town and surrounding areas to curb rising criminal activity.
Authorities suspect that an armed gang operating within the region may be responsible for multiple similar robberies. Investigations are ongoing, with police vowing to dismantle the criminal network and bring the perpetrators to justice
