Authorities have recovered one of the five firearms stolen during the recent Gen Z protests that turned violent in Kikuyu and Dagoretti. The recovered weapon, an AK-47 rifle, had been looted from the Dagoretti Police Post during the unrest on June 25, 2025.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed the recovery after officers from the Kabete Police Station responded to a tip-off regarding a suspicious individual at Gravity Bar in the Gahui area. The suspect was reportedly seen carrying a large, bulging bag. Acting swiftly, law enforcement officers used forensic leads to trace the individual’s movements and located his residence in the Njuki-Kirigu area.
However, upon noticing the approaching officers, the suspect fled and managed to evade capture. A subsequent search of his residence, conducted in the presence of his mother, led to the discovery of the stolen AK-47 rifle. Alongside it, police found an empty magazine and a single round of 7.62mm special ammunition. Investigations confirmed the firearm had been taken from the Dagoretti Police Post during the chaotic scenes that unfolded earlier in the week.
Efforts to apprehend the suspect are ongoing, with detectives continuing to follow leads. A manhunt is underway, and security agencies remain on high alert, determined to track down all individuals involved in the theft and unrest.
The violent protests, which initially began as peaceful demonstrations, escalated after rogue individuals blocked roads, lit bonfires, and clashed with security personnel. The situation quickly spiraled out of control, resulting in the destruction of public property, including the Dagoretti Police Post. During the melee, five firearms were stolen two AK-47 rifles, one G3 rifle, a Jericho pistol, and an anti-riot gun.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any information that may aid in the recovery of the remaining weapons. They emphasized that community cooperation is crucial in maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of citizens.
The search for the remaining stolen firearms continues, with security agencies intensifying efforts to bring all culprits to justice.
