Detectives in Mombasa have arrested a suspect believed to be behind a series of incidents involving drink spiking and theft from unsuspecting travellers. The man, who had been on the radar of law enforcement for some time, was intercepted at the Mariakani Weighbridge while attempting to board a Nairobi-bound bus.
Authorities revealed that the suspect has been targeting passengers travelling to and from Mombasa, Kisumu, Tanzania, and other destinations. His modus operandi involved drugging unsuspecting travellers using spiked soft drinks and snacks, leaving them unconscious before making away with their cash and valuables.
Investigations show that several complaints had been lodged at the Mombasa Central Police Station linking the suspect to similar cases. Detectives had been tracking his movements after multiple reports of travellers being stupefied and robbed in transit. His luck eventually ran out when sharp-eyed officers spotted him during one of his alleged attempts and moved in swiftly to arrest him.
At the time of his arrest, the suspect was reportedly under the influence of drugs. Upon conducting a search, detectives recovered two Lorivan tablets, alongside assorted snacks and beverages believed to have been laced with sedatives. These items were intended for use on his next unsuspecting victims.
The recovery of the drugs and spiked food items provided investigators with crucial evidence supporting claims that he had been orchestrating the spiking and robbery scheme for some time. The suspect’s methods were described as calculated and dangerous, given the risks such drugs pose to the health and safety of his victims.
Following his arrest, the suspect was taken into custody and is currently being held as detectives finalize investigations. Plans are underway to arraign him in court, where he is expected to face charges related to stupefying travellers and stealing from them.
Authorities have since urged members of the public, especially frequent travellers, to exercise caution and remain vigilant while on long-distance trips. Passengers are advised not to accept food or drinks from strangers and to immediately report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
The arrest is considered a major breakthrough in curbing drink spiking in Mombasa, a crime that has left many victims counting losses and facing health risks. With the suspect behind bars, detectives believe they have disrupted a notorious scheme that has preyed on unsuspecting travellers across the region.
