Police in Tigoni have arrested a suspected drug trafficker in the Karambaini Tea Zone, Kiambaa Sub-County, following a targeted intelligence-led operation.
The suspect, who was riding a TVS Star motorcycle (registration KMCY 735B) and posing as a khat transporter, was intercepted by officers who discovered 800 rolls of bhang hidden inside a woven bag. Alongside the narcotics, police recovered Ksh 3,795 believed to be proceeds from the illegal trade.
Both the suspect and the seized items are being held in custody, pending formal charges in court. Authorities say the arrest is part of intensified efforts to dismantle drug distribution networks in the region.
The operation in Tigoni comes in the wake of another major anti-narcotics bust in Mombasa, where law enforcement intercepted a large cannabis consignment during a separate sting.
In that case, officers from Changamwe Police Station, acting on detailed intelligence, set up an undercover ambush to target a passenger bus operated by Buscar Bus Ltd, suspected of ferrying contraband goods. The vehicle was intercepted at the Changamwe Roundabout, where it discreetly offloaded a bale disguised as second-hand clothing (mitumba).
Shortly after, a man on a motorcycle arrived to collect the suspicious package. As he attempted to load it, officers swiftly moved in and apprehended him. Upon inspection, the bale was found to be a 90-kilogram sack packed with rolls of cannabis sativa, concealed in black polythene and wrapped in clothing to mask its contents.
The Mombasa suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue. Authorities have emphasized that such coordinated crackdowns are designed to disrupt the supply chain of narcotics before they reach local markets.
Law enforcement agencies are urging the public to provide information on suspicious activities in their neighborhoods, assuring that tip-offs will be treated with confidentiality. Police have reiterated their commitment to combating drug trafficking, noting that these seizures demonstrate the effectiveness of intelligence-sharing between security units.
Both incidents underline the scale and persistence of illegal cannabis trade in Kenya, with traffickers employing deceptive tactics such as using legitimate businesses and disguising contraband as harmless goods. Authorities maintain that such operations will continue as part of the broader war against drugs, with more arrests expected in the coming weeks.
