Shock and grief have swept through Jacaranda Gardens estate in Roysambu, Nairobi County, after a tragic incident in which a 5-year-old girl was reportedly killed by her uncle. The child, identified as Amanda, died after being thrown off a second-floor balcony by her intoxicated uncle.
The horrific incident occurred on the night of Wednesday, June 11. It is reported that the man returned home heavily intoxicated and began causing a disturbance within the apartment. At the time of the incident, Amanda’s parents were not at home. The only people present were Amanda and the family’s house girl.
Witnesses recount that the man became increasingly aggressive upon entering the home. In the chaos that followed, he allegedly overpowered the house girl and snatched Amanda from her arms. Alarmed and sensing imminent danger, the house girl fled the apartment, screaming for help in an attempt to alert neighbours and security personnel.
Tragically, before help could arrive, the man reportedly threw Amanda from the balcony of the apartment. Security guards and neighbours responded quickly to the distress calls, rushing to the scene only to be met by a horrifying sight. They managed to subdue the man before calling the police.
Amanda was immediately rushed to Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital by concerned residents, but despite the efforts of medical personnel, she succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment.
Police officers from Kiamumbi Police Station responded promptly and arrested the suspect. However, due to injuries he sustained after being beaten by enraged residents, he was taken to Kiambu Hospital for medical attention under police custody.
The house girl has since recorded a statement with the police to aid in the ongoing investigation. The case has now been referred to Kahawa West Police Station for further handling. Officers from Kahawa West have already visited the hospital for documentation and have initiated procedures to escalate the case to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
In the wake of the tragedy, the Jacaranda Gardens community has been left in mourning. A candle lighting ceremony in memory of Amanda has been organized at the scene of the incident. It is scheduled to take place at 7:00 pm and is open to all residents and well-wishers.
The community describes Amanda as a vibrant and outgoing child whose loss has left a profound void. Residents are now calling for increased awareness and support systems to prevent such devastating incidents in the future. As investigations continue, many are still struggling to come to terms with the senseless act that claimed the life of a young, innocent soul.
