A Dutch national has been arrested in Diani, Kwale County, for allegedly assaulting a police officer and engaging in multiple criminal activities. The suspect, identified as Elwin Ter Horst, is accused of trafficking narcotic drugs, assault, malicious damage to property, creating a disturbance, and being unlawfully present in Kenya.
Authorities said the suspect was apprehended at Boma Banda Cottage along Beach Road in Diani after police responded to reports that he was causing a disturbance, damaging property, and assaulting his girlfriend, identified as Angela Atieno Onduru. Officers found that the woman had been rescued by the caretaker and security guards, who rushed her to Diani Beach Hospital for treatment.
Police officers tried to engage the suspect, who had locked himself inside his room. After several attempts, they managed to convince him to open the door, leading to his arrest. During a search of the premises, officers discovered a whitish substance suspected to be narcotic drugs weighing approximately three grams. Further investigations revealed that the suspect’s passport had expired, indicating he was in the country unlawfully.
While being held at Diani Police Station, the suspect allegedly turned violent, blew mucus, and spat on a police officer. This incident sparked outrage and renewed calls for stricter measures against foreigners who disrespect Kenyan law enforcement officers.
Local authorities have vowed to take firm action against any individual who undermines law and order. They emphasized that Kenya welcomes tourists and foreign investors but will not tolerate misconduct or abuse directed at citizens or security personnel.
“All visitors coming to Kenya, whether for tourism or business, must respect the laws of the country. Any form of abuse or misconduct will lead to prosecution and deportation,” police officials warned.
Following his arrest, Horst expressed remorse, claiming he was not in a stable mental state during the incident. He said he suffered from psychological issues and had gone without food or water for a long time. He apologized to the police, stating that he loves Kenya and wishes to continue living and doing business in the country
