The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has launched a major crackdown targeting senior government officials and private businesspersons suspected of involvement in a Ksh 3.8 billion corruption scheme within the Ministry of Sports.
The commission executed search warrants at the homes and offices of several high-ranking officials across Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos, Nyeri, and Nanyuki as part of ongoing investigations into the alleged embezzlement of public funds.
According to EACC, the probe focuses on the unlawful acquisition of public property and abuse of office by top officials within the State Department for Sports. The alleged offences reportedly took place during the 2020/2021 and 2025/2026 financial years, raising concerns about continued graft within government agencies despite ongoing anti-corruption efforts.
Among those targeted were a Senior Assistant Commissioner of Sports, a Deputy Accountant General in the Ministry of ASALs and Regional Development, an accountant at the State Department for Sports, and several directors of private travel companies believed to have facilitated the fraudulent transactions.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects colluded to siphon billions of shillings through irregular tenders awarded to travel and logistics companies connected to ministry officials. The deals reportedly involved inflated invoices and ghost services that drained public resources meant for sports development programs.
During the raids, EACC officers recovered critical evidence, including Ksh 3.58 million in cash, multiple land title deeds, and several luxury vehicles suspected to have been purchased using proceeds of corruption.
The commission confirmed that forensic analysis of the recovered documents and digital data is ongoing, with arrests expected once sufficient evidence is gathered.
EACC has reiterated its commitment to ensuring accountability in the management of public funds, warning that all individuals found culpable will face prosecution in accordance with the law.
