Residents of several villages in Elgeyo Marakwet County have voluntarily surrendered seven AK-47 rifles to the police in a significant effort to reduce armed conflicts in the region. The firearms were handed over on September 21, 2025, by community members in Murukutwa, Chechan, Chemwonyo, and Talai villages within the Kolowa area, as part of a broader peace and disarmament initiative.
The National Police Service (NPS) confirmed that the rifles were received by the sub-county security team with the support of local peace committees. The voluntary surrender of these firearms is being seen as a crucial step towards fostering peace, reducing the prevalence of illegal weapons, and curbing violence in the Kerio Valley region.
In a statement, the NPS praised the community’s growing commitment to voluntary disarmament, noting that such actions are central to improving security and preventing misuse of firearms in violent conflicts and criminal activities. The rifles have been secured in safe custody at Tot Police Station, marking another milestone in the ongoing efforts to control illegal weaponry in the area.
This voluntary surrender is part of a larger trend in the region. Just the day before, a resident from Tamkal village in neighboring Baringo County also handed over an AK-47 rifle, along with a magazine and two rounds of ammunition. This rifle was received by the sub-county security team in the presence of the local peace committee, underscoring the widespread community support for disarmament.
The National Police Service has commended the cooperation between the public, the local peace committees, and the security forces, highlighting how such efforts can lead to a more peaceful and secure environment.
