A suspected father-and-son duo has been arrested for allegedly defrauding an M-Pesa agent of KSh230,000 in a scheme that took place in Gikomba Market, Nairobi County. The pair, identified as 49-year-old Peter Mwendwa Musyoka and his 23-year-old son, Dennis Musyoka, were apprehended on October 2, 2025, at their hideout in Nyama Villa Estate, located in the Komarock area.
The arrest followed a meticulous investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives, who tracked the father and son’s digital footprint back to a fraudulent M-Pesa transaction carried out on September 2, 2025, in Gikomba Market. Through the use of digital forensics, the detectives were able to trace their movements and activities, ultimately leading them to their hideout.
At the residence of the suspects, investigators recovered a collection of SIM cards—both used and unused—along with multiple identification cards, agent and paybill numbers from Safaricom, Airtel, and Telkom. Additionally, laptops and smartphones believed to have been used in the fraudulent scheme were seized as evidence.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Peter Musyoka, the father, is the mastermind behind the fraud, and he is accused of grooming his son into participating in the illegal activities. The father and son duo is suspected of being part of a larger criminal syndicate that has been targeting mobile money agents in Nairobi.
Both suspects are currently in police custody as they undergo processing ahead of their arraignment in court. Detectives have indicated that the investigation is ongoing, with further efforts being made to identify and apprehend other members of the syndicate. The authorities are urging mobile money agents and the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that may be linked to such fraud schemes.
This arrest serves as a reminder of the growing concerns surrounding mobile money fraud, particularly in urban areas, where such scams have become a significant threat to businesses and individuals alike.
