A multi-agency security team in Embu North has arrested five gangsters linked to a daring carjacking incident that saw a consignment of toothpaste and other household products worth over KSh5.4 million stolen.
The incident occurred in Gathoge, Kirinyaga County, when a company driver ferrying the products was ambushed by five armed men. The suspects violently forced him out of the vehicle before making away with the goods, which included hundreds of boxes of Colgate toothpaste, toothbrushes, detergents, and fabric softeners.
Following the robbery, investigators launched a manhunt that stretched into neighboring counties. Acting on intelligence, the officers tracked the stolen cargo to the Mutunduri area of Embu, where a well-coordinated raid was carried out. During the operation, law enforcement officers recovered a significant portion of the stolen products hidden in a storage facility. Two vehicles believed to have been used to ferry the stolen goods were also impounded.
The five suspects, all believed to be part of an organized criminal network targeting high-value commercial goods in transit, were apprehended on the spot. They are currently being held in police custody pending arraignment. Authorities noted that the gang may have planned the heist in advance, as the goods were swiftly moved and concealed within hours of the robbery.
The recovery of the stolen toothpaste and related products not only saved the victimized company from a major financial blow but also disrupted what police believe to be a larger operation involving stolen consumer goods. Investigators are pursuing additional leads to determine whether more suspects were involved and to establish possible links to similar incidents reported in the region.
Police in Embu and Kirinyaga have urged transport companies and drivers to remain vigilant, especially when ferrying high-value goods. Security agencies are also enhancing intelligence-sharing mechanisms across counties to curb the rising trend of highway robberies and carjackings targeting commercial shipments.
The arrest of the five suspects has been hailed as a significant breakthrough in the fight against organized crime in the region. Authorities have reassured residents and businesses that they will continue to intensify operations aimed at dismantling gangs that threaten public safety and disrupt commerce.
