Four police officers have been arrested following the fatal shooting of their colleague, Constable Hassan Lolkidid, in a suspected case of mistaken identity in Mai Mahiu, Nakuru County.
According to police reports, Constable Lolkidid was killed at around 1 a.m. while responding to a reported incident involving the offloading of tyres. He was among six officers from Mai Mahiu Police Station who had rushed to the scene after receiving the call.
Upon arrival, the officers allegedly encountered a group of individuals who immediately fled when the police approached. In response, the officers opened fire, suspecting the group to be engaged in criminal activity. Moments later, they discovered that one of their own, Constable Lolkidid, had been shot and was lying in a pool of blood.
Lolkidid sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene. His death prompted an immediate internal investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Initial statements indicated that all six officers at the scene denied firing their weapons. However, their service firearms were confiscated and submitted for ballistic testing to establish the source of the fatal bullet.
After thorough analysis, four of the officers were found to have discharged their weapons during the incident. The findings led to their arrest, and they are expected to be charged with murder. The other two officers are assisting investigators as witnesses.
Meanwhile, the lorry that was reportedly being offloaded at the scene was towed to the Mai Mahiu Police Station for further examination. Constable Lolkidid’s body was transferred to the mortuary, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted to provide more details on the nature of the fatal injury.
In a separate case in Gilgil, also in Nakuru County, another police officer sustained serious injuries after being stabbed while attempting to arrest a suspect wanted for housebreaking. The injured officer is receiving treatment at Gilgil Sub-County Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition, as the manhunt for the attacker continues.
