A 28-year-old man lost his life in a violent robbery in Mathare slums, Nairobi, as police continue to search for the suspects behind the gruesome attack. The man, identified as Peter Muthama, was reportedly stabbed in the back during a struggle with thugs who are believed to have been attempting to rob him on the night of June 1.
According to police, Muthama’s body was discovered lying next to a makeshift structure long after the incident had occurred. Initial investigations indicate that the assailants fled the scene immediately after the attack, leaving behind no immediate trace. Authorities responded after residents reported the body, and the remains were taken to a nearby mortuary pending an autopsy.
Law enforcement officers have since launched a manhunt for the gang believed to be behind the murder. The police are urging residents who might have any information to come forward and assist with investigations. They reiterated the dangers of resisting during robberies, noting that many attackers are often under the influence of drugs or alcohol, making them more volatile and prone to excessive violence when met with resistance.
In a separate but related incident, police have arrested several suspects believed to be behind a spate of violent crimes in Nakuru, including the murder of a shop attendant. The incident occurred in the Soilo area of Kaptembwo, where three men armed with a rifle stormed into a shop and demanded cash and other valuables.
A confrontation ensued, during which the gang shot and fatally wounded 23-year-old Duncan Elias Mwambili. He sustained a gunshot wound to the stomach and was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. Witnesses at the scene reported that the assailants escaped on an unmarked motorcycle, making it harder for authorities to track them immediately.
At the crime scene, investigators recovered three spent cartridges of 7.6mm×39, commonly used in rifles such as the AK-47. Mwambili’s body was later moved to the mortuary, where it awaits a postmortem examination.
Police have since arrested at least seven suspects in connection with the Nakuru robbery and murder. Some of the suspects have already been placed at the crime scene through witness identification and other preliminary evidence. Authorities believe the gang may be responsible for at least four other murder cases in the area.
Investigations are ongoing, and a dedicated team of detectives has taken over the case. An AK-47 rifle recovered during the arrests has been sent for ballistic testing to determine if it was used in this or other recent crimes.
In a dramatic turn of events, the same gang is believed to have been involved in the killing of a police officer during an ambush in the Free Area of Nakuru. The attack also left two other officers nursing gunshot wounds. The suspects were arrested just hours after the ambush, and police now believe they have successfully disrupted a highly organized and deadly criminal ring.
Authorities plan to charge the suspects with multiple counts, including murder and robbery with violence. Police have assured the public that they are intensifying patrols and intelligence operations in the affected areas to curb the rising wave of violent crimes and restore public safety.
