A major police operation in Nyeri has led to the recovery of several household electronics stolen during the recent Gen Z protests that turned violent on June 25, 2025. Authorities apprehended a suspect found in possession of a washing machine, a 43-inch Vitron television, and a remote control all confirmed to have been looted from the Naivas Supermarket in Nyeri.
The recovery is part of a larger nationwide crackdown following the chaos that erupted during initially peaceful demonstrations against government policies. As unrest spread, opportunistic criminals looted stores, set buildings ablaze, and launched attacks on security personnel.
More than 150 suspects have so far been arrested and arraigned across the country, with law enforcement vowing to continue investigations and bring all offenders to justice. In Kiambu County alone, 85 individuals were presented before the Thika Law Courts, with 56 of them coming from Juja Police Station and 29 from Thika Police Station. One additional suspect appeared virtually before the Ruiru Law Courts.
Elsewhere, 32 suspects were arraigned in Murang’a, 15 in Ol Kalou, 10 in Kisii, and 9 in Bungoma. Authorities expect these figures to rise as security operations intensify.
In other regions, more stolen property has been recovered. In Mbeere South and Kiritiri, two women were arrested after police traced a looted white metal-cased water tank to their location. In Nairobi’s Kikuyu and Dagoretti neighborhoods, police intercepted a Nissan matatu believed to have been used to transport rioters. Four suspects were arrested in the vehicle, and looted goods were recovered.
One of the suspects, identified only as Kariuki, is alleged to have been caught on CCTV carrying a stolen police firearm. The group is also suspected of stealing police uniforms, attacking officers, and setting fire to a police post.
In Maai Mahiu, Naivasha Sub-County, another operation led to the arrest of seven suspects. Stolen property from the Transit Hotel, including curtains, pillowcases, a curtain rod, and large cooking sufurias, was recovered from the scene.
A total of 20 suspects from the Dagoretti and Naivasha raids remain in custody. They are expected to face a range of charges, including theft, arson, destruction of property, and illegal possession of police equipment.
Law enforcement agencies continue to urge the public to report any looted goods or suspicious activity. Authorities have emphasized that the current crackdown is part of a broader strategy to restore calm and uphold the rule of law after the widespread disruptions witnessed during the protests.
