A self-trained artist from Nakuru County, Philemon Sang, is nursing serious injuries after being attacked by goons on Sunday, October 26, 2025. Sang, who gained fame for his sculptures of President William Ruto and Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon, was reportedly assaulted by individuals allegedly connected to a local Member of Parliament.
According to his father, Thomas Mitei, Sang had travelled from Kaplelach village, Nyota Ward, to Sirikwa, hoping to meet an official from the Office of the President ahead of Ruto’s scheduled visit on Monday. He carried with him a sculpture of the President as a gesture of respect and loyalty.
However, Mitei narrated that upon arrival, Sang was accosted by a group of goons. The MP, after learning about the scuffle, allegedly directed his team to escort Sang to safety. Instead, the group drove him to a maize farm, where he was beaten again and abandoned.
Sang was later rescued and taken to Keringet Hospital for treatment before being discharged to continue recovery at home. Photos of the injured artist receiving medical care have since surfaced, sparking outrage among locals.
Mitei described his son as a gifted self-taught artist who also works as a carpenter. He revealed that Sang had previously presented a sculpture to Ruto during his tenure as Deputy President and received Ksh50,000 as a token of appreciation. The recognition, Mitei said, motivated his son to continue expressing himself through art.
Sang’s most notable work a sculpture of Faith Kipyegon went viral after her victory at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Though the artwork drew mixed reactions online, it earned Sang nationwide attention for celebrating one of Kenya’s most decorated athletes.
As authorities investigate the attack, residents and fellow artists have called for justice, condemning the violence against a man whose art has symbolized patriotism and creativity.
