A family getaway in Diani turned tragic after a two-and-a-half-year-old boy drowned in a swimming pool on Saturday afternoon. The heartbreaking incident occurred while the mother was preparing a meal in their rented apartment in Kwale County.
According to police reports, the mother and son had checked into the apartment for the weekend as part of a short holiday. Around 1 pm, the mother was in the kitchen when the young boy wandered off unnoticed. A few minutes later, she realized he was missing and stepped out to search for him. To her horror, she found his lifeless body floating in the swimming pool.
Efforts were made to save the child as he was rushed to a nearby hospital. Sadly, medical personnel declared him dead on arrival. The body has since been moved to the mortuary, where an autopsy is expected to be conducted to establish the exact cause of death. Authorities have launched investigations to determine if there was any negligence or other contributing factors to the incident.
Elsewhere, in a separate tragic occurrence, a woman was found dead inside her house in the Laini Saba area of Kibera. Identified as Beatrice Wangui, she was discovered alone in her residence on Saturday evening. The cause of her death remains unknown at this point, and police have confirmed that investigations are underway. Her body has also been transferred to the mortuary for postmortem analysis.
In Homa Bay County, another distressing report emerged when the body of Luke Otieno, aged 43, was discovered in his maize plantation. Otieno had been reported missing a day earlier after failing to return home on June 27. His body was found the following morning around 9 am in the plantation, and investigators are working to uncover the circumstances surrounding his sudden death. His body has also been taken to the mortuary pending autopsy.
Meanwhile, in Nyamira County, a suspected thief met a violent end in a case of mob justice. The man, identified as George Sagini, 29, was lynched by an angry crowd in the Bonyamatuta area. He was accused of stealing a six-kilogram gas cylinder. The mob stoned him and later set his body on fire. Authorities have condemned the act and reminded the public that taking the law into their own hands is a criminal offense. Investigations into the lynching are ongoing, and Sagini’s body has been moved to the mortuary for a postmortem.
Cases of mob justice continue to rise across the country despite numerous campaigns urging the public to report suspected criminals to the police instead of resorting to violence.
