The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has opened investigations into the alleged assault of a minor while in police custody at Narosusura Police Station in Narok South Sub-County. The minor, identified as Felix Senet Takona, was reportedly arrested on suspicion of committing a petty offence before being subjected to physical assault while detained.
Following the incident, the child was admitted to Narok County Referral Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment for injuries sustained during his detention. IPOA confirmed that it had begun a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the arrest, detention, and alleged assault to establish whether any police officers violated the law.
In a statement, IPOA emphasized that the inquiry would be conducted with impartiality and transparency. The authority’s chairperson reaffirmed IPOA’s commitment to ensuring accountability within the police service and upholding human rights, particularly in cases involving vulnerable individuals such as minors.
According to IPOA, the investigation seeks to determine the extent of police involvement in the incident and will recommend appropriate action once completed. The authority reiterated that its mandate under Article 244 of the Constitution is to ensure that police officers observe the law, maintain professionalism, and respect human dignity in all operations.
The case has reignited public debate over the treatment of suspects in police custody and raised concerns about the use of excessive force by law enforcement officers. IPOA assured the public that it would pursue justice for the minor and continue to monitor similar incidents across the country.
This investigation comes days after a separate case in Gatundu South, where a 30-year-old man, Paul Njuguna, died in police custody under unclear circumstances. The incident sparked outrage among residents, who accused officers of brutality and demanded an independent probe. Witnesses claimed the officers used excessive force during the arrest, resulting in the man’s death.
The back-to-back incidents have intensified calls for police reform and reinforced the need for stronger oversight mechanisms to protect the rights of suspects and promote accountability within the security sector. IPOA has pledged to conclude its investigations promptly and recommend necessary disciplinary or legal action against any officers found culpable.
