Detectives in Kakamega County are investigating a brutal murder in which a sand dealer was hacked to death by a gang in Shinyalu.
The victim, identified as 51-year-old Timothy Bwonya, was ambushed in Lununi village shortly after selling two lorries of sand. His body was discovered lying in a pool of blood, bearing multiple deep cuts to the head and hands. Investigators believe the money he had received from the sand sales triggered the fatal attack.
Police have confirmed that one suspect has been arrested in connection with the killing, while a manhunt is underway for the rest of the gang. The body was transferred to the mortuary as an autopsy and further investigations continue.
Elsewhere in Makunga, Kakamega County, another man was killed in what authorities described as a love triangle turned violent. The victim, 46-year-old Fredrick Shakava Chombo, was found dead near the Mshibale stream. He had injuries on his head, eye, hand, and leg.
Reports indicate that Chombo had confronted another man, accusing him of having an affair with his wife. The confrontation escalated into violence, with the assailant fatally striking Chombo before dragging his body to a secondary scene. The suspect has since been arrested as police pursue a murder charge.
Meanwhile, mob justice claimed three more lives in separate incidents across Bungoma and Kakamega counties. In Sangalo, Bungoma County, two men suspected of motorcycle theft were stoned to death by residents. In another case at Khayega, Kakamega County, a man accused of plotting to steal cattle in Mukhonje village was lynched after an alarm was raised.
Police have condemned the mob killings, urging residents to surrender suspects to law enforcement instead of taking matters into their own hands. Authorities emphasized that investigations are ongoing in all the cases.
The string of killings has raised alarm in the region, with security agencies stepping up patrols and urging residents to cooperate with detectives to curb rising violent crime.
