The government’s disarmament campaign in Kerio Valley continues to make significant progress as residents voluntarily surrender more illegal firearms. Security officials at Tot Police Station recently received two additional weapons — an AK-47 rifle and a G3 rifle — from residents of Kaben and Arror Locations.
This latest recovery brings the total number of weapons collected in the region to 290, along with 2,137 rounds of ammunition. Authorities have attributed this success to increased collaboration between the National Police Service (NPS) and local communities, which they say has greatly enhanced ongoing peace and stability efforts.
In a recent statement, the NPS praised residents for their growing cooperation, noting that it demonstrates strengthened public trust in the government’s security initiatives. The service urged more residents to share information that could lead to the recovery of additional illegal weapons still in circulation.
The government has reiterated its commitment to reducing gun-related violence in pastoral regions, emphasizing a strategy built on dialogue, trust-building, and consistent security operations. Officials have continued to engage community leaders and residents, encouraging them to voluntarily surrender weapons as part of a broader peace and development agenda for the valley.
The disarmament drive has been ongoing for months, with authorities reporting major gains in September 2025 when 19 firearms, 109 rounds of assorted ammunition, and one rifle grenade were handed over in the Tot and Chesongoch areas. These recoveries, according to security officials, underscore the effectiveness of a dual approach combining community outreach with targeted operations.
Security agencies remain confident that sustained engagement and cooperation will help eliminate illegal arms and restore lasting peace to Kerio Valley. The ongoing exercise aims to create a safer environment for local communities, supporting efforts toward long-term stability and development in the region.
Authorities believe the continued success of the disarmament initiative will play a crucial role in curbing armed violence and fostering mutual trust between residents and law enforcement.
