A teacher in Kilifi County has been arrested following the death of a 15-year-old pupil who allegedly succumbed to injuries sustained after corporal punishment. The incident is reported to have taken place on Friday, September 19, 2025, at Gongoni Primary School in Kilifi South Sub-County.
According to investigations, the teacher identified as Ian Tembo allegedly instructed a group of Grade 8 pupils to kneel before administering corporal punishment during the last lesson before games. Some students were caned, while others were reportedly struck on the head as part of the disciplinary action.
Among those punished was Anestine Dzidza Tunje, a 15-year-old girl who later went home after school. The following day, she complained of persistent headaches, which continued to worsen over the weekend. Concerned family members rushed her to Kilifi County Hospital, where she received treatment. Unfortunately, despite medical efforts, the girl’s condition deteriorated, and she passed away on September 25, 2025.
Her family reported the matter to the authorities two days after her death, sparking a probe by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). Detectives began tracing the events leading to her death, focusing on whether the punishment administered in school directly contributed to the fatal outcome.
On Wednesday, October 1, 2025, the suspect was taken into custody at Mtwapa Police Station. Investigators handling the case indicated that they would be seeking more time from the courts to detain him while they gather sufficient evidence to build a strong case before trial.
Local police confirmed the arrest and emphasized that the matter remains under active investigation. Detectives are working to establish a direct link between the punishment inflicted at the school and the fatal injuries that led to the pupil’s death. Authorities have also engaged medical experts to provide clarity on the cause of death.
The incident has reignited debate over the use of corporal punishment in schools. Although outlawed in Kenya, reports of its practice still surface, often sparking outrage from parents, education stakeholders, and human rights groups. This case adds to growing concerns about student safety and the accountability of teachers entrusted with the care of children.
The arrested teacher is expected to face charges once investigations are concluded and sufficient evidence is presented in court.
