A 25-year-old woman from Ogango area in Kisumu East Sub-County is currently fighting for her life at the Kisumu County Teaching and Referral Hospital after allegedly attempting to take her own life following a domestic altercation with her husband.
According to a police report filed at Migosi Police Station, the incident occurred on Tuesday evening. The woman’s husband reported that she had ingested a pesticide after a heated argument between them. Officers responding to the scene discovered a sachet of a powdered insecticide within the compound, suspected to be the substance consumed in the suicide attempt.
A suicide note was also found at the scene, in which the woman cited ongoing domestic disagreements as the primary cause of her actions. The note and the sachet have been collected by police and are being held as evidence in the ongoing investigation.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the couple had engaged in a fierce quarrel, during which the husband allegedly threatened to send his wife away. The threat reportedly upset the woman deeply, prompting her to resort to the drastic act.
She was quickly rushed to the Kisumu County Teaching and Referral Hospital by neighbors and family members, where medical personnel are currently working to stabilize her condition.
Police have launched an inquiry into the incident and are urging couples facing relationship challenges to seek support through appropriate channels such as family counseling or local administration offices. “This is a tragic reminder of the emotional toll domestic strife can take. We urge couples to seek dialogue and counseling rather than letting matters escalate to this level,” said an officer from Migosi Police Station.
Mental health advocates in the region are also calling for increased awareness and access to psychosocial support services, particularly for young couples dealing with marital pressures.
This incident adds to growing concerns about mental health and domestic disputes in Kisumu and other parts of the country. Authorities are calling on communities to be vigilant and supportive of individuals who may be experiencing emotional distress.
If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, contact a nearby health facility or reach out to Kenya Red Cross or local counseling services for immediate assistance.
