Police in Mombasa County have arrested a suspect found in possession of 80 rolls of a substance believed to be cannabis sativa (commonly known as bhang), during a targeted operation in the Makaburini area. The coordinated effort involved officers from Kongowea Police Station and National Government Administration Officers.
Authorities revealed that the suspect was armed with two knives at the time of the arrest and was also found carrying 10 gas lighters and other paraphernalia commonly associated with narcotic use or distribution. Although the suspect’s identity remains undisclosed, they have since been placed in police custody as legal proceedings are being prepared.
The arrest forms part of an ongoing national crackdown on drug trafficking and substance abuse. Security agencies have intensified surveillance and operations in known hotspots, particularly within urban and coastal regions, in a bid to root out the distribution networks of illegal substances.
Recent months have seen a series of similar operations where individuals have been apprehended with various illicit drugs, including cannabis, heroin, and cocaine. Mombasa, being a key port city, has often been identified as a transit point for narcotics, and authorities have vowed to close all gaps being exploited by criminals in the drug trade.
In their official statement, police highlighted the importance of collaborative action among law enforcement agencies, public administrators, and local communities. They emphasized that achieving a drug-free society requires sustained cooperation, including the active sharing of intelligence from members of the public.
The broader campaign, they noted, is aimed at protecting youth from falling into addiction and crime-related behavior while promoting public health and safety. The authorities reiterated their commitment to not only arrest offenders but also dismantle supply chains and raise awareness about the dangers of drug use.
According to law enforcement, public support continues to play a vital role in these initiatives. Members of the community have been encouraged to report suspicious activity through anonymous tip lines and local administration offices. Officers praised recent efforts by locals who have shown increasing willingness to participate in safeguarding their neighborhoods.
The suspect is expected to face charges relating to the illegal possession of narcotics and dangerous weapons. Investigators are also probing the possible link between the individual and larger drug trafficking syndicates operating in the region.
Efforts are underway to intensify patrols and conduct random searches in areas flagged for drug activity. Authorities have assured that these interventions will continue until drug networks are significantly curtailed and vulnerable communities are fully protected from their influence.
