Police in Likoni arrested a suspect and seized 284 rolls of cannabis during an anti-narcotics operation on Saturday, August 30, 2025. The operation followed a tip-off from members of the public who reported suspicious activity linked to a notorious drug peddler in the Tonge Nyama area. Acting on the intelligence, officers from Likoni Sub-County headquarters raided a house where they arrested one person and recovered a sack filled with cannabis rolls.
The National Police Service (NPS), in a statement released the following day, confirmed the seizure and praised residents for their vigilance. They noted that the arrest was a direct result of community cooperation and emphasized the importance of public participation in combating crime. The suspect was taken into custody at Likoni Police Station and is expected to appear in court on September 1, 2025, where he will face charges related to drug possession and trafficking. Authorities highlighted that this operation is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle drug networks in coastal regions, which have long been flagged as hotspots for narcotics.
Police reiterated their commitment to shielding communities, especially young people, from the harmful effects of drugs. The Service further appealed to the public to continue reporting suspicious activities, stressing that such vigilance plays a central role in the broader strategy of crime prevention. They pointed out that community policing, coupled with intelligence-led operations, remains an effective way to weaken trafficking networks.
Meanwhile, in a related incident in Kakamega County, police impounded a motorcycle transporting 25 kilograms of cannabis. The incident occurred along a road in Matungu when officers mounted a checkpoint after receiving a tip-off from Koyonzo Police Station. The motorcyclist, upon being flagged down, defied police orders and attempted to speed past the roadblock. In the process, he ran over a spike barrier, puncturing the front tyre of his motorcycle. He later abandoned the motorcycle and the consignment before fleeing on foot.
The police secured the motorcycle and the seized cannabis, which were booked as exhibits. A manhunt has since been launched to apprehend the fugitive. Authorities stated that this seizure underscores the scale of drug trafficking activities in the region and pledged to intensify crackdowns across Kakamega and other parts of the country. They assured the public that more coordinated efforts, involving intelligence sharing and community support, will be employed to weaken criminal networks and prevent drugs from reaching communities.
Both incidents highlight the growing vigilance of law enforcement agencies in the fight against illegal substances, with the NPS reaffirming its resolve to sustain operations that safeguard the public and uphold safety across the country.
