The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has issued a strong demand for justice following the suspicious death of Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody under controversial circumstances. LSK President Faith Odhiambo has called for immediate, independent investigations into the incident, citing concerns over potential evidence tampering and abuse of power by law enforcement.
Ojwang, who had travelled to Homa Bay to visit family, was reportedly arrested on Saturday over a “derogatory” post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). According to police, he was later transported to Nairobi and placed in a cell, where he allegedly inflicted fatal injuries upon himself. He succumbed to those injuries while receiving treatment in hospital.
Speaking on Sunday, Odhiambo emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and treating all citizens equally under the justice system. “Just as Kenyans are expected to abide by the law, the police must do the same. We want the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to take up this matter immediately,” she said. “A post-mortem must be conducted promptly to prevent any tampering with evidence. We want answers and justice for Albert’s family and for all Kenyans.”
Human rights organisation Amnesty International also weighed in, condemning the death and demanding accountability. “No Kenyan should lose their life while in police custody,” the group stated. “Police officers have a legal and moral duty to protect every person in their care.”
Amnesty urged IPOA and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) to carry out a transparent and independent investigation. The organisation highlighted Ojwang’s case as part of a broader pattern of abuse that calls for urgent reforms within Kenya’s law enforcement agencies.
The circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s arrest and subsequent death have sparked widespread public concern and renewed calls for justice sector reforms. As the nation awaits an official autopsy and investigative report, pressure mounts on authorities to deliver a thorough, impartial inquiry and ensure those responsible are held to account.
