The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has launched an investigation into the alleged abuse of a 17-year-old boy who was assaulted in police custody and sentenced without legal representation in Narok. LSK President Faith Odhiambo confirmed that the minor is currently receiving treatment at the Narok County Referral Hospital, where he remains under police guard.
Odhiambo condemned the incident as a violation of the boy’s constitutional rights and the principles of child protection enshrined in Kenyan law. “This unfortunate situation undermines the best interests of the child and is inconsistent with the Constitution,” she said. “We have instructed an advocate to pursue all legal avenues to ensure the boy gets justice and that all responsible for this grave miscarriage of justice are held accountable.”
According to LSK, the boy was arrested on October 10, 2025, and arraigned three days later on allegations of breaking into a building and committing a felony. Despite being a minor, the Narok Magistrate’s Court proceeded with the case in the absence of his parents or legal representation, contravening the Children Act and fair trial standards.
After visiting the teenager in the hospital, Odhiambo confirmed that he sustained severe injuries allegedly inflicted by police officers. The boy told her that one of the individuals who assaulted him was present during his court appearance.
Family members allege that the police denied them access to the minor following his arrest and only learned of his condition after he was hospitalized. Doctors at Narok County Referral Hospital described his state as critical, citing severe infections and possible chemical burns on both legs.
The LSK has vowed to ensure justice for the boy and accountability for those involved, emphasizing that no child should suffer abuse or face trial without representation in Kenya’s justice system.
