A shocking incident in Machakos County has left residents reeling after a man brutally murdered his girlfriend before being lynched by an enraged mob. The tragic event occurred on Monday afternoon at Mwanyani village, located about two kilometres from Machakos town along the Machakos–Kitui road.
According to police reports, officers received a distress call from members of the public alerting them to a possible murder in the area. Upon arrival, they discovered the lifeless body of a young woman, identified as Susan Nyaboke, lying in a pool of blood by the roadside. She had sustained deep cuts on her neck, believed to have been inflicted with a machete.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect, said to be the deceased woman’s boyfriend, ambushed her as she attempted to board a motorbike to her workplace. Witnesses reported that he attacked her in broad daylight before attempting to flee the scene. The brutal act drew the attention of residents and traders at the nearby market, who swiftly pursued and captured him.
In a moment of anger and vengeance, the mob descended on the man, beating him to death before setting his body ablaze. Police arrived shortly afterward to find both bodies lying at the scene.
Authorities suspect that the man may have been a college student in Machakos, though he was not carrying any form of identification. Friends of the couple disclosed that the two shared a child, and the murder may have been sparked by a relationship dispute.
Community leaders have condemned the act, urging residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. They called on individuals facing relationship challenges to seek peaceful resolutions instead of resorting to violence.
The bodies of the deceased were moved to the Machakos Level Five Referral Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination. Police have since launched investigations to establish the full circumstances of the incident and identify any individuals involved in the mob lynching.
