Security concerns heightened on Saturday when a man armed with both a gun and a knife was arrested outside State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, just a day before the scheduled memorial service for conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Authorities identified the suspect as 42-year-old Joshua Runkles, who was found carrying weapons into a prohibited area while allegedly impersonating a law enforcement officer. He presented inactive law enforcement credentials and reportedly claimed he was there to provide private security. Investigators are now working to establish his intent and purpose at the stadium. Runkles was later released on bond, but the investigation remains active.
The incident prompted swift coordination between local police and federal agencies, including the Secret Service, given the scale and significance of the event. Security officials described the gathering as a “special event assessment rating level 1” occasion, a designation reserved for high-profile national events that require extensive interagency support. As a result, those attending the service have been advised to expect airport-style screening, with strict bans on bags, including clear ones.
Charlie Kirk’s memorial is expected to draw up to 100,000 attendees, underscoring his influence as the founder of the conservative advocacy group Turning Point USA. Prominent political figures including former President Donald Trump, Senator JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth are scheduled to deliver remarks. Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, who has since taken over leadership of TPUSA, will also address the gathering.
Kirk, only 31 at the time of his death, was shot and killed on September 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University. Prosecutors charged 22-year-old Tyler Robinson with aggravated murder and signaled their intent to pursue the death penalty if convicted. Initial investigations suggest Robinson acted out of personal resentment toward Kirk’s views, though authorities have found no ties to organized political groups.
The heightened security, high-profile attendance, and recent tragedy surrounding Kirk’s death have made Sunday’s memorial one of the most closely monitored public gatherings in recent U.S. history.
