A man in Nyabeda village, Rarieda, Siaya County, has been arrested after allegedly beating to death a suspected intruder in his compound. The incident occurred at dawn on July 31 when the man, who was alone at home, woke up to a commotion outside his house. Upon investigating, he reportedly found an individual attempting to gain entry into his residence.
The man told authorities that he recognized the suspected intruder only by the name Davie. A physical confrontation ensued, during which the homeowner sustained injuries to his head, hands, and legs. Despite his injuries, he managed to overpower the suspect. He then tied the man’s hands and legs with a sisal rope before launching a prolonged assault.
The suspect died at the scene, having suffered extensive injuries to the left side of his head and face. Authorities indicated that the fatal wounds were consistent with blunt force trauma. A hammer and a car wheel spanner believed to have been used in the attack were recovered from the scene.
When police arrived, they found the deceased still bound, and the homeowner was taken into custody for further investigation on suspicion of murder. Officers noted that the man should have contacted them immediately rather than take matters into his own hands.
This incident adds to the growing concerns over rising cases of mob justice and unlawful killings across the country. Law enforcement officials continue to discourage such acts, urging the public to surrender suspected criminals to the authorities rather than resort to violence.
In a separate but related case, three suspects were arrested in connection with the murder of a woman in Kulamawe, Isiolo County. During the operation, authorities recovered two firearms: an AK-47 rifle loaded with three bullets and a G3 rifle with an empty magazine and a spent cartridge in the chamber.
Two of the suspects were initially apprehended by members of the public and later handed over to police. Both sustained serious injuries during the incident and were taken to hospital for treatment.
Investigations into both cases are ongoing, with police emphasizing the importance of legal procedures in handling suspected criminals.
