Tragedy struck Samia in Busia County after an elderly man was lynched by a mob moments after allegedly killing his 89-year-old mother. The suspect, identified as 69-year-old Ernest Mudivo, reportedly attacked and killed his mother, Rosalia Auma Obonyo, outside her home on Monday.
According to police reports, villagers discovered the lifeless body of the elderly woman outside her house and immediately mobilized to search for the suspect. Mudivo was later found a few meters away from the scene of the murder, where the enraged locals descended on him, stoning him to death. Police who arrived at the scene confirmed both deaths, stating that the motive behind the brutal act had not yet been established.
The bodies of both Mudivo and his mother were moved to the mortuary pending postmortem examinations and further investigations. Authorities have condemned the incident, warning residents against taking the law into their own hands. Police urged members of the public to surrender suspects to law enforcement agencies for due process instead of resorting to mob justice, which has been on the rise in several parts of the country.
In a separate incident in Wagai, Siaya County, police are investigating the murder of a 21-year-old man whose naked body was found lying next to a tree. The body, identified as that of Evans Kibet, was partially covered with branches, suggesting an attempt to conceal the crime. The remains were taken to the local mortuary as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, in Makueni County, a man died in a house fire in the Malili area near Cool Breeze Restaurant. The victim was trapped inside an iron-sheet structure that was completely engulfed in flames. Police said the cause of the fire remains unknown, and the victim’s identity is yet to be confirmed.
Elsewhere in Meru County’s Kathwene village, detectives are probing the murder of 40-year-old Peninna Gakii, who was allegedly killed by her husband during a domestic dispute. Her body was found in the bedroom with injuries consistent with an assault by a blunt object.
In another case from Emayoka village, Luanda in Vihiga County, police discovered the body of 50-year-old Patrick Sichenga Omufuoko, who is believed to have died after being hit on the head. Investigations into all the incidents are ongoing as authorities call for calm and cooperation from the public.
