Police officers in Kakamega County intercepted a major haul of cannabis sativa during a nighttime patrol, arresting one suspect while another remains on the run. The incident unfolded during a routine roadblock operation in Matungu, where officers flagged down a suspicious private vehicle.
Instead of complying with the directive, the driver defied orders, sped off, and drove over spikes that had been laid across the road. The attempted escape triggered a high-speed chase towards the Mayoni area, with officers in pursuit.
The chase came to a dramatic end when police managed to intercept the vehicle. Upon searching it, law enforcement officers discovered 100 kilograms of cannabis sativa carefully wrapped in polythene bags. The seizure marked one of the largest recent narcotics interceptions in the region.
Police confirmed that the drugs were immediately secured as exhibits at Matungu Police Station, pending further investigations. Of the two occupants inside the vehicle, one was apprehended on the spot and placed in custody. However, the second individual managed to escape during the operation and remains at large.
Authorities have since launched a manhunt for the fugitive suspect believed to be a key player in the transportation of the narcotics. Security teams are working with intelligence units to track him down and bring him to justice.
The arrested suspect is expected to face charges related to trafficking and possession of narcotics once investigations are complete. Police noted that the matter is under active probe, with the possibility of uncovering wider networks connected to the transportation and distribution of the banned substance.
The successful interception underscores the ongoing crackdown on illegal drug trafficking within Kakamega County and beyond. Officers involved in the operation were commended for their swift action and commitment to duty, which prevented the drugs from reaching the market.
The incident has also renewed calls for heightened vigilance along highways and border points to curb the smuggling of narcotics. Local residents have been urged to cooperate with security agencies by sharing information that could aid in dismantling drug networks operating in the region.
As the investigation continues, the police remain confident that the fugitive accomplice will soon be apprehended, ensuring accountability for all parties involved in the illicit trade.
