A man was arrested on Friday morning after storming the Suneka Catholic Parish Church in Kisii County, causing extensive damage and injuring three security guards in a shocking act of violence.
According to police reports, the suspect broke through a perimeter fence and forcefully entered the church, armed with a metal bar. He proceeded to vandalize property estimated to be worth over Sh200,000. Among the items destroyed were 27 plastic chairs, two music system speakers, a flash door, and a window.
Attempts by security personnel to subdue the assailant were met with aggression. In the ensuing altercation, three guards sustained serious injuries, with one losing three teeth. The injured guards were rushed to a nearby hospital where they are reported to be in stable condition.
Police officers responded promptly to the distress call, managing to disarm and arrest the suspect. He too sustained injuries during the confrontation and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Authorities indicated that the suspect may undergo psychiatric evaluation as part of ongoing investigations to determine his motive.
The incident is part of a broader trend of disturbing events across the country. Police reported four separate suicide cases, sparking fresh concerns over mental health. In Msambweni, Kwale County, a 30-year-old man was found hanging from a bedsheet in his home. In Nandi Hills, 21-year-old Victor Kipkosgei, who was reportedly battling physical trauma from a leg injury, also died by suicide.
Two other cases were reported in Homa Bay and Nairobi’s Makongeni area. In Homa Bay, James Otieno, 30, was found hanging in his house, while in Nairobi, 20-year-old Patricia Muendi Meka died by suicide at her mabati house in Mbotela.
In another tragic development, a six-year-old girl drowned in a well near her home in Opapo Village, Rongo, Migori County. She had been left alone while her parents went to work.
All the incidents are under police investigation, with authorities urging communities to remain vigilant and report early signs of mental distress among individuals.
