Police in Meru County have intercepted a major consignment of bhang as security agencies intensify their nationwide war on illicit drugs. Officers recovered 15 bales of cannabis sativa hidden inside a lorry during a well-coordinated operation in Imenti North Sub-County.
Acting on intelligence from members of the public, the National Police Service (NPS) mounted a roadblock along the Ruiri–Nchiru Road, where they stopped an Isuzu lorry suspected of transporting illegal substances. Upon inspection, officers discovered a secret compartment within the vehicle containing 15 tightly wrapped bales of bhang.
The lorry was immediately towed to Meru Police Station, where the recovered narcotics were booked as exhibits. The driver of the vehicle managed to flee the scene before his arrest, prompting a manhunt by detectives. According to police, several individuals believed to be linked to the drug consignment are already being interrogated as part of ongoing investigations.
Authorities say the seizure is part of an intensified crackdown targeting drug trafficking syndicates operating across the country. The National Police Service has vowed to sustain pressure on narcotics networks that continue to endanger lives and disrupt communities. The success of the Meru operation follows a similar bust in Mombasa earlier in the week, which exposed a multi-billion-shilling drug trafficking ring.
Police commended members of the public for providing critical intelligence that led to the recovery. They urged continued cooperation between law enforcement agencies and citizens, emphasizing that community involvement remains vital in combating the spread of narcotics.
The NPS encouraged Kenyans to report suspicious activities through toll-free emergency numbers 999, 911, and 112, or via the anonymous #FichuaKwaDCI platform. The service reiterated its commitment to strengthening community policing and dismantling criminal cartels involved in the production, distribution, and sale of illicit substances.
The Meru bhang seizure underscores the government’s growing determination to protect communities from drug abuse and reinforce the rule of law through targeted, intelligence-driven operations.
