A man wanted for murder in the United States has been arrested in Nairobi, Kenya, after evading capture for 15 years. Nicolas Soares, 34, was flown back to the United States where he faced charges in connection with a 2010 murder in Miami. Soares is accused of second-degree murder and armed robbery following a shooting that left one man dead.
The crime occurred in September 2010 when Soares, then 19, allegedly went to the home of Herbert Caniza with the intent to rob him of cash and marijuana. When Caniza opened the door, Soares shot him in the chest before fleeing the scene. Investigators later determined that Soares had been struggling financially and saw the robbery as a way to obtain money and drugs to resell.
Witnesses reportedly confirmed the details of the planned robbery, including how Soares obtained the weapon used in the shooting. In the aftermath, Soares contacted his mother, telling her that his life was in danger and that he needed to leave urgently. She allegedly arranged for him to travel to Brazil to stay with relatives, helping him evade the authorities.
Despite an arrest warrant being issued in March 2025, it wasn’t until coordinated efforts between Miami police and federal authorities that Soares was located in Nairobi. Authorities managed to track him down in Kenya, where he was taken into custody. His extradition to the United States was swiftly arranged, and Soares was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami.
Soares now faces the prospect of standing trial in Florida for the 2010 murder, bringing to an end a lengthy pursuit that spanned across multiple continents. The details of his time in Kenya remain undisclosed, including how long he had been living in the region before his arrest.
