A large-scale illicit alcohol operation in Kibra has been dismantled following a dramatic pre-dawn raid that exposed two fully operational distilleries and more than 30 distillation drums. The bust represents one of the most significant crackdowns against illegal brews in Nairobi in recent months.
The operation was carried out after intelligence revealed the existence of a concealed brewing hub in the Sarangombe area. The site was hidden deep within the informal settlements, tucked along a riverbank to avoid detection. At around 2:00 am, enforcement officers moved in and struck the hideout, uncovering an active production site that was already running at industrial levels.
Upon entry, the team discovered two massive distilleries in full operation, with dozens of distillation drums actively engaged in the brewing process. In addition, over 100 sealed drums, each holding 200 litres of kangara—the harmful raw material commonly used in the production of illicit liquor—were seized. The sheer volume of brewing capacity indicated that the distillery had the potential to flood the market with thousands of litres of dangerous alcohol.
To ensure the operation would not resume, the entire setup was dismantled and destroyed on-site. By doing so, authorities cut off a significant supply chain that had been endangering lives in the surrounding communities.
The crackdown was hailed as a decisive move to protect the public from the devastating effects of illicit alcohol. Such brews have long been linked to numerous health complications, preventable deaths, and social problems, including crime and family breakdowns.
The raid also forms part of a wider 100 Days Rapid Results Initiative (RRI) aimed at curbing the spread of drug and substance abuse across Kenya. The initiative involves coordinated multi-agency efforts to identify, disrupt, and shut down networks behind the manufacture and sale of illegal substances.
Authorities emphasized that this operation is a clear warning to those profiting from illicit alcohol. The dismantling of the Kibra hub demonstrates the government’s determination to protect public health, reclaim neighbourhoods, and restore order.
Surveillance and enforcement measures will remain ongoing in Nairobi and other counties to stem the production and distribution of dangerous brews. Communities are also being urged to collaborate with authorities by sharing intelligence that can help track down similar operations.
The successful bust marks a major milestone in the fight against illicit brews, reinforcing the country’s commitment to a safer, healthier society.
