Police in Nandi are investigating a dramatic incident in which suspects mysteriously surrendered a stolen pistol and crucial documents belonging to former GSU Commandant Douglas Cheramboss. The items had been stolen from his Mercedes-Benz at the weekend, prompting an intense manhunt.
According to police, Cheramboss a licensed firearm holder lost a briefcase containing a pistol loaded with 24 bullets, several title deeds, a file of personal documents, six cheque books from multiple banks, office keys, safe keys, and Sh25,000. The theft occurred on Saturday morning after he parked his car at a construction site in a local shopping centre before inspecting a parcel of land he had recently bought.
He only realised the break-in after driving to a nearby petrol station.
In a bizarre twist, an unidentified individual reportedly approached two boda boda riders in Koitabut on Sunday, handed them the briefcase, and instructed them to deliver it to Kamimei, where a waiting Mercedes-Benz would collect it. When the riders arrived, no vehicle was in sight. They kept the briefcase overnight before handing it over to Koitabut Police Post, where officers confirmed it was the stolen property. Only the cash was missing.
Cheramboss later visited the station and positively identified his belongings. Police say they are actively pursuing the suspects and are keen to establish the motive behind the theft and subsequent surrender.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident in Nairobi’s Lavington area, a bodyguard attached to a Rift Valley MP recovered a rusty pistol magazine loaded with 35 rounds. The magazine was found wrapped in nylon and stuck inside a faulty toilet in a newly acquired house. Police have launched investigations to determine its ownership.
Authorities say both cases remain under active investigation.
