A couple in Ndhiwa, Homa Bay County, has been arrested for allegedly subjecting their seven-year-old son to severe physical abuse after accusing him of stealing and eating fish from their kitchen. The disturbing incident took place in Ramoya village, located in Kajwang’ Sub-Location, and has sparked outrage among local residents and authorities.
According to reports, the young boy, a Grade Three pupil, suffered serious burns on both hands in what is believed to have been a cruel and intentional act of punishment. The child was allegedly forced by his parents to endure the ordeal after they discovered he had eaten the fish without permission.
The incident came to light after concerned neighbours noticed the boy’s injuries and reported the matter to local authorities. Acting swiftly on the tip-off, officials arrested the couple on Monday evening. Upon investigation, it was revealed that the father had initially forced the child to consume the entire fish he was suspected of stealing. Following this, the mother is said to have carried out the physical punishment.
Authorities detailed the shocking method used in the assault. It is alleged that the mother set plastic carrier bags on fire and then forced her son to place his hands under the melting plastic. As the molten material dripped, it caused severe burns to the child’s hands. This brutal punishment has drawn condemnation from both the community and local administrators.
Local leadership expressed concern over the extreme nature of the punishment and the trauma inflicted on the child. The incident has raised broader concerns about child welfare and the treatment of minors in domestic settings, particularly where discipline crosses into abuse.
The suspects are currently being held at the Ndhiwa Police Station and are expected to face joint charges related to the assault of the minor. Police have assured the public that justice will be pursued and that the child will be placed under protective care as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, community leaders and child rights advocates are calling for increased vigilance and intervention in households where children may be at risk of abuse. They have urged residents to report any suspicious behaviour or signs of violence against children, stressing the importance of safeguarding the rights and well-being of all minors.
As the case progresses, there is growing demand for stricter penalties for child abuse and more robust child protection mechanisms in rural areas. The boy is receiving medical treatment for his injuries, and his condition is being monitored closely by both medical personnel and social services.
