Former Nairobi County Executive Committee Member for Information Communication Technology (ICT), Newton Munene, was found dead in his house on the night of October 10, 2025, just a week after testifying in former Governor Mike Sonko’s corruption case.
The news of Munene’s death was announced by Sonko on Saturday, October 11, through his official social media platforms. At the time of publication, the cause of death had not been confirmed.
Sonko, in a strongly worded statement, alleged that cartels were behind Munene’s death, linking it directly to his recent testimony in court where he appeared as a defence witness.
“I have received the sad news of Mr. Newton Munene’s passing with profound shock. He was a member of my Nairobi County Executive in charge of ICT,” Sonko stated.
He went on to condemn the incident, describing it as a cowardly act meant to instill fear among those standing by him.
“If my accusers possess any evidence linking me to corruption, they should confront me in a court of law. I refuse to bow to threats, intimidation, and coercion while innocent individuals are murdered for exercising their constitutional rights,” he said.
Sonko further revealed that several former CEC Members who served in his administration and had volunteered to testify in his defence were now facing threats and intimidation to stop them from appearing in court.
“I have reliable information indicating that some former CECMs who served under my leadership are being threatened not to testify. No level of intimidation or threats will deter me from seeking justice,” Sonko added.
Munene was among three key witnesses who had recently testified in defence of Sonko in a corruption case before the Anti-Corruption Court in Nairobi.
His body was later moved to Lee Funeral Home as investigations into his death continue.
