A deadly night raid by suspected bandits in Isiolo County has left one person dead and six others seriously injured, heightening concerns over escalating insecurity in the region. The violent ambush occurred in Burat Ward on the night of Sunday, June 29, 2025, when armed attackers descended on a herd of camels, making away with an unknown number of the animals.
The raid triggered a response from local residents, including camel owner Osman Bidu and a group of ten young men who attempted to pursue the attackers. However, their vehicle was ambushed in a counterattack, and the bandits opened fire, injuring several of them. Six individuals sustained gunshot wounds and are currently being treated at Isiolo County Referral Hospital.
Bidu, who is recovering from a gunshot wound to the thigh, voiced frustration at the slow response from security forces. He noted that residents have frequently been left to defend themselves, despite lacking the necessary resources or support. His remarks highlight a broader sentiment among locals who feel abandoned by authorities in the face of growing insecurity.
Another victim, Mohamed Isak Ali, suffered a broken leg after being shot during the ambush. He explained that he was part of a second group rushing to aid those attacked in the initial raid when they were also targeted by the armed bandits.
The attack has triggered widespread outrage and renewed calls for urgent government intervention. Community members have accused the government of complacency and neglect in handling persistent cases of banditry and lawlessness in Isiolo and neighboring areas.
Local activist Anab Kassim called for the immediate dismissal of the Isiolo County Commissioner and demanded a robust disarmament campaign to root out illegal firearms and end the cycle of violence. She emphasized the need for a comprehensive and sustained approach to security, rather than reactive, short-term responses.
Adding to the pressure, Mohamed Ali, a resident and community leader, issued a seven-day ultimatum for the government to release a clear and actionable plan to address the security crisis. He warned that continued inaction could lead to further deterioration in the region’s stability.
Echoing these concerns, resident Fatu Abgudo urged the government to act swiftly and decisively to prevent more bloodshed. She stressed the urgency of restoring peace and protecting vulnerable communities who have borne the brunt of repeated attacks.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing northern Kenya, where armed banditry remains a persistent threat to lives, livelihoods, and regional development.
