Police officers in Nakuru North Subcounty on Sunday saved a Pakistani national from a mob that had surrounded him over alleged fraud. The man was reportedly accused of swindling locals of their money through false pretences. Quick intervention by law enforcement prevented what could have escalated into a lynching.
According to preliminary findings, the suspect was not acting alone. Two of his accomplices managed to escape the scene and remain at large as police intensify the search. Investigations revealed that the suspect is not new to fraud allegations. He was already facing charges in Ahero for obtaining money by false pretences and had been released on bond. Despite being required to report back to the police on August 20, 2025, he allegedly resumed fraudulent activities instead.
The suspect is now in custody and undergoing formal processing. Authorities have urged members of the public to report such crimes anonymously through official reporting channels, including toll-free hotlines and dedicated WhatsApp numbers.
This case highlights growing concerns about fraud syndicates in Kenya. Just months earlier, detectives arrested another suspect accused of defrauding a businesswoman of over Sh5 million. In that case, the suspect posed as a foodstuff supplier, promising to deliver thousands of bags of rice and sugar. After receiving the payment, he switched off his phone and attempted to flee the country. Detectives eventually intercepted him at the Isebania border as he allegedly tried to cross into Tanzania.
Despite pleading not guilty when arraigned in court, that suspect was released on cash bail as the case proceeded. These repeated cases of large-scale fraud underscore the challenges facing law enforcement and the need for heightened vigilance by the public.
Police have reiterated that justice should be pursued through legal channels rather than mob action, warning that taking the law into one’s hands only fuels more violence. Their swift response in Nakuru demonstrates efforts to protect both suspects’ rights and public order while ensuring due process is followed.
