Police officers in Buruburu Sub-County have arrested a man following the discovery of a massive bhang haul in the Umoja 1 Market area, Nairobi. During the operation, officers seized approximately 20 kilograms of unprocessed cannabis along with 3,000 prepared rolls and 33 additional packages of the drug, all retained as exhibits for further investigation.
The suspect, believed to have been under police surveillance for some time, was taken into custody and is expected to be arraigned in court. Authorities noted that the arrest marked a significant step in ongoing efforts to dismantle drug distribution networks within the city and beyond.
According to the police report, the operation was part of a coordinated crackdown on narcotics and illicit alcohol that has been ongoing across various Nairobi neighborhoods. Officers involved in the raid were commended for their vigilance and commitment in pursuing individuals linked to illegal drug trade activities. The successful operation also underscores the importance of community intelligence in combating the circulation of narcotics in urban areas.
Police have called upon members of the public to support their anti-narcotics efforts by reporting any suspicious activities that may be connected to drug trafficking. The collaboration between law enforcement and citizens, they said, remains vital in curbing the sale and abuse of harmful substances that threaten public safety and the well-being of young people in particular.
The Umoja arrest follows another major bust in Meru County, where officers intercepted a matatu transporting 25 kilograms of cannabis sativa. Acting on a tip-off, officers stopped a Nairobi–Maua-bound vehicle, where they discovered the drugs concealed in various pieces of luggage, including a black suitcase, a backpack, and a white carrier bag. Two passengers linked to the packages were arrested and are currently facing charges related to drug possession and trafficking.
Police continue to intensify nationwide operations aimed at eliminating drug trafficking networks that operate between counties. These efforts form part of a wider national strategy to address the production, distribution, and consumption of illegal substances, with authorities emphasizing their commitment to maintaining a drug-free Kenya.
The recent operations in Umoja and Meru highlight the growing determination of law enforcement agencies to rid communities of narcotics and safeguard public health.
