Police in Garissa have intensified their fight against drug trafficking after officers apprehended a person of interest connected to the narcotics trade in the Ziwani area of Garissa Town. The arrest, which took place on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, marks another step in the ongoing crackdown targeting the circulation of illegal substances in the region.
Acting on intelligence reports, officers intercepted the suspect who was found in possession of a red carrier bag containing 20 balls of cannabis sativa. Alongside the drugs, police recovered Ksh1,800 in mixed denominations suspected to be proceeds from the illegal trade. The suspect was immediately taken into custody and is being held at Garissa Police Station for further processing.
Authorities confirmed that the seized cannabis has been secured as an exhibit and will form part of the evidence in court once investigations are complete. The suspect is expected to be arraigned after police conclude their inquiries.
Crackdown on Narcotics
The arrest is part of an ongoing campaign to dismantle drug networks operating in Garissa and beyond. Law enforcement has been stepping up intelligence-led operations aimed at curbing the supply and use of narcotics, which remain a significant challenge in local communities.
Drug abuse has been cited as a major contributor to crime, school dropouts, and social instability in Garissa and other regions. The narcotics trade is believed to target vulnerable groups, particularly the youth, undermining social development and community safety.
Police have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious drug-related activities. Community participation, they noted, is crucial in sustaining the fight against narcotics and preventing drugs from taking root in society.
“The sale and use of drugs not only destroy lives but also fuel insecurity in towns. While enforcement remains relentless, public cooperation is equally important,” authorities emphasized.
Building Safer Communities
The arrest highlights the determination of security agencies to address the narcotics menace. With continuous intelligence sharing and collaboration between communities and law enforcement, authorities remain optimistic that the circulation of illegal drugs will be significantly reduced.
The operation in Ziwani is a reminder that efforts to combat narcotics are ongoing, with police reaffirming their commitment to safeguarding communities from the negative impact of drug trafficking.
