Authorities have intensified the war against drug trafficking after intercepting a major consignment of bhang in Narok County. Two men were arrested and nine sacks of the narcotic substance recovered during a targeted operation at Suswa Shopping Centre.
The joint operation was executed by a specialized team that had been acting on credible intelligence regarding ongoing drug trafficking activities in the region. Detectives laid an ambush and intercepted a vehicle suspected of ferrying narcotics. Upon inspection, the vehicle was found packed to capacity with cannabis sativa.
The driver and his accomplice were swiftly apprehended at the scene and placed in custody. A thorough inspection of the vehicle revealed nine sacks of bhang concealed inside. The suspects are now facing charges related to drug trafficking and are set to be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded.
Meanwhile, the impounded vehicle and the narcotic haul have been secured as exhibits to support the ongoing legal process. Investigators are also pursuing leads to establish whether the arrested suspects are linked to a larger trafficking network that has been operating across counties.
The operation in Narok comes at a time when security agencies have intensified crackdowns on narcotics along major transit routes. Narok’s strategic location along highways connecting key towns has increasingly been exploited by traffickers to ferry drugs into different parts of the country.
In a related incident in Kericho County, security officers recovered more than 300 kilograms of bhang following a dramatic chase along the Kericho–Molo–Nakuru Highway. Acting on a tip-off, police flagged down a suspicious vehicle at Londiani Junction. However, the driver defied orders and sped off, prompting a high-speed pursuit.
The chase ended at Mau Summit after the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, leaving behind the massive consignment. Security agencies have since launched a manhunt to apprehend the suspect and dismantle the drug network believed to be behind the shipment.
These operations underscore the government’s heightened efforts to combat the production, distribution, and consumption of illicit drugs. Authorities have called upon communities to continue sharing information that can aid in dismantling trafficking syndicates and curbing the spread of narcotics, particularly in rural counties that are increasingly being targeted as transit hubs.
