Authorities have intensified the fight against illegal alcohol trade with a major crackdown in Kangemi, Dagoretti Sub-County, where over 10,000 litres of illicit brew were recovered and destroyed. The large-scale raid targeted producers and distributors of the outlawed substance, commonly referred to as kangara, which has been blamed for serious health risks and rising insecurity across communities.
During the operation, security teams also recovered 50 kilograms of jaggery, five packets of yeast catalyst, and thirteen cartons of second-generation liquor. These items, often used in the preparation and distribution of illegal brews, were seized as exhibits to aid ongoing investigations. Authorities confirmed that efforts are underway to trace and apprehend those behind the illegal trade networks.
The destruction of the consignment forms part of a sustained nationwide campaign to eliminate illicit brews and curb the circulation of harmful second-generation alcohol. Such drinks have been linked to severe health complications, loss of lives, and social problems, prompting government agencies to intensify enforcement measures.
Officials explained that the crackdown is not only aimed at seizing and destroying dangerous drinks but also dismantling entire supply chains that profit from exploiting vulnerable communities. They emphasized that law enforcement remains committed to protecting citizens from harmful substances and creating safer neighborhoods.
Members of the public were urged to play an active role in the fight by reporting suspicious activities linked to the production, storage, or distribution of illicit alcohol. Authorities have made available several toll-free hotlines, including 999, 911, and 112, as well as dedicated reporting platforms such as #FichuaKwaDCI and WhatsApp contacts. Residents are encouraged to share timely information that can assist in bringing offenders to justice.
The fight against illicit brews remains a priority, with authorities warning that those caught engaging in the illegal business will face the full force of the law. Communities are urged to support the ongoing efforts to safeguard public health and ensure that criminal networks profiting from the illicit trade are permanently dismantled.
The Kangemi operation stands as a strong reminder of the government’s resolve to eliminate the circulation of unsafe brews and to protect Kenyans from the devastating effects of unregulated alcohol.
