Detectives in Bungoma County are investigating the mysterious death of a 78-year-old woman whose body was found in her home under disturbing circumstances.
The victim, identified as Mary Nekesa Muricho, was discovered lying on her bed in Mayanja Vitunguu village on Saturday, August 23. Preliminary police reports indicate that her body bore visible bruises on her legs and hands, alongside a deep cut above the eye. Investigators also recovered bloodstained clothes inside the house, raising suspicion of foul play.
According to officers at the scene, signs of a struggle were visible both inside and outside the house. Detectives suspect that the elderly woman may have been attacked outside before her body was moved to the bed in an attempt to conceal the true events leading to her death.
A househelp who lived with the deceased has been taken into custody and is being treated as the prime suspect in the murder. Authorities confirmed that the suspect is currently assisting police with investigations as detectives piece together what transpired on the night of the killing. The body of Muricho has since been transferred to the mortuary pending a postmortem examination, which is expected to provide crucial evidence.
Elsewhere, in Meru County, police have launched a manhunt after a man identified as Elias Murerwa succumbed to injuries following an assault. Murerwa had been admitted to hospital after sustaining serious wounds during a confrontation with a known assailant. He died on August 21 while undergoing treatment. Investigators say the suspect remains at large, and the case is being treated as murder.
Meanwhile, tension gripped Gatimu village in Ngecha, Kiambu County, when a 23-year-old man went on a machete rampage, attacking villagers indiscriminately. Three people were left nursing deep cuts on their hands and legs as the attacker, armed with the weapon, struck at random.
Frightened residents attempted to lynch the assailant, but police intervened in time. Officers eventually subdued and arrested the man, who continued to brandish the machete while threatening anyone who approached him. Authorities confirmed that the victims were rushed to hospital and are in stable condition. The suspect is expected to undergo a psychiatric evaluation before being arraigned in court.
